What does Organic mean?
The short answer is that we don’t use any synthetic fertilizers or pesticides to grow our crops. But it is much more than that – for us, “organic” refers to a production system that actively promotes the health of soils, ecosystems and people.
All weeds on our farm are manually removed by tractor, hoe or hand, and no herbicides are ever used.
Insect pests are dealt with by manual removal, covering of crops with physical barriers, encouraging beneficial insects or as a last resort using biologically based insecticides.
We use only untreated seed, organically produced whenever possible. No GMO seed is ever used on our farm.
We believe healthy soils grow healthy crops, which make healthy people, simple as that. We strive to achieve the healthiest soils possible by using compost, cover crops, and biologically based soil amendments. We believe the granite below our glacial soils adds minerals and a uniqueness to our crops. We believe the forests, and the diverse flora and fauna also contribute to this uniqueness.
